IMPASSE

"Urnoboros is the serpent that bites or swallows its tail. This image represents under an animal form, the circle incarnated in the eternal return, and indicates that a new beginning is coincident with an end in perpetual repetition, or that the end and the beginning of a path are the same thing from a superior point of view. Urnoboros is the psychological equivalent of a symbolized incest; it shows the existence of a non-differentiated unit from which all things are born and into which all things return" [1].

With this sound sculpture, I am trying to symbolize the Urnoboros principle with two speakers that are born from the same head (a portable boom box), and which bite themselves or seem to be in an auto copulation state. The sound which is produced through each speaker keeps the same principle: one of them produces a continuous sound which makes an upward glissandi and that returns to stay momentarily in one single frequency; the other speaker produces another continuous sound which is the mirror of the first one, that is, which goes downward and comes back staying momentarily in a frequency slightly inferior to the first one. The produced result is that when both sound circles [2] arrive at the two nearby frequencies, an acoustic phenomena called beating takes place through which a vibration is produced. This vibration causes the speakers to slide on the floor, giving place to a kind of catharsis or energetic orgasm.

“Urnoboros es la serpiente que muerde o que se traga su cola. Esta imagen representa, bajo forma animal, el círculo encarnado del eterno retorno, e indica que un nuevo principio coincide con un final dentro de una repetición perpetua, o que el término de una vía y su principio son una sola y misma cosa desde un punto de vista superior...Equivalente psicológico del incesto, pero de un incesto simbolizado, el urnoboros señala la existencia de un indiferenciado del cuál todas las cosas salen y al cuál todas las cosas retornan” .
Esta escultura sonora intenta simbolizar el principio de urnoboros mediante dos bocinas que salen de una misma cabeza (grabadora portatil), y que se muerden o que parecen estar en un estado de autocopulación. El sonido que sale por cada bocina guarda el mismo principio: una de ellas emite un sonido contínuo que hace un glissandi hacia arriba y que luego regresa para mantenerse momentaneamente en una frecuencia, la otra bocina emite otro sonido contínuo que hace un glissandi espejo hacia abajo y que luego regresa para mantenerse momentaneamente en una frecuencia ligeramente inferior a la de la otra bocina. El resultado es que cuando ambos círculos sonoros se establecen en esas dos frecuencias casi iguales, un fenómeno físico de batimiento de señal tiene lugar, mediante el cuál se produce una vibración tal que hace que las dos bocinas se muevan y se desplacen en el piso, dando lugar a una especie de catársis u orgasmo energético.
